2011 Ford Fiesta First Impressions

The North American Fiesta is here!

Start the Fiesta!
The new Fiesta is everything I could hope for. First, it's “identical” to the European car, so I'll never again be able to complain about that. In the looks department alone, the car murders the stereotype that used to dictate that small cars were boring, for people with no taste and stylistically-challenged. Those days are gone!

Ford’s genius
Why this all works is because the car is hot, fashionable and just about sexy. Personally, I have a hard time with the sedan’s “C” pillar profile and large butt. The H/B, on the other hand, needs nothing more than a lowered suspension and some smartly selected 17” wheels and booyah: A hip affordable whip for the young masses.

Ford makes a power play with F-150

The 2011 F-150 might look the same on the outside, but between the front fenders it’s a whole new truck game.

In one lightning-strike move, Ford’s top-selling hauler unleashes a drastically different powertrain lineup that, depending on your selection, allows you to travel further on a tank of gas, tote a heavier payload and pull a heavier travel trailer. There are also more safety and convenience features.

It’s common for automakers to refresh their more popular models after a two- or three-year period, but for Ford to bring out a quartet of new V6 and V8 engines is nothing short of astonishing. It will also likely send the competition back to their respective drawing boards to devise some sort of response.

Reducing fuel consumption is important to everyone, but it’s of particular importance to truck owners. These normally thirsty rigs tend to consume more than their fair share of petroleum products. Obviously any move to reel in consumption is money ahead for truckers.

On this front, Ford appears to have all the bases covered, although there are no hybrid or diesel powertrains in the mix.

For light-duty use, the F-150 is offered with a base 3.7-litre V6 that provides 302 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. The 3.7 is the first V6 available in a full-size Ford pickup since the 2008 model year.

Next up is a 5.0-litre V8 that generates 360 horsepower and a 380 pound-feet torque rating. For heavy lifting and off-roading duties, the most muscular engine in the F-150 garage is a 6.2-litre V8 that puts out 411 horsepower and a road-ripping 434 pound-feet of torque.

Later in the model year, Ford will offer its 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged Ecoboost V6 with 365 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque.

For 2011, the model and trim availability list is as long as several arms. The existing XL, STX, XLT, FX2/FX4 and Lariat are joined by the XLT Custom and Lariat Limited.

Regardless of trim, cab size, box length or drive system, the F-150’s engine-upgrade program was long overdue, if rather sudden. Ford’s full-size pickup peers have literally been gaining strength of late and it was clearly high time for Ford to respond in kind.

With plenty of powertrain choices to suit a multitude of work and play applications, the F-150 stands to gain considerable ground — and credibility — in the pickup segment.

Metronews article on the all new Lincoln MKX

Lincoln MKX moves up the luxury ladder

Looks, tech and ride give new model competitive edge

The midsize luxury crossover arena is a hot one, with an ever-expanding roster vying for your upscale dollar.

Lincoln has given its all-wheel-drive five-seat MKX a major refresh for 2011. With a starting price of $46,500, it’s right in the thick of the BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Infiniti, Acura, Lexus and Land Rover fight.

The 2011 MKX gets new LED taillights, new headlamps, sculpted front fenders, 18-inch alloys (20s are optional), a new hood and, of course, Lincoln’s split-wing signature grill. To these eyes, it’s the best looking vehicle in Lincoln’s lineup — a classy take on the well-resolved proportions of the Ford Edge.

Power comes from a 3.7L V6 Ti-VCT that makes 305 hp and 280 lb.-ft. of torque, and achieves 12.2 L/100 km city and 8.8 L /100 km highway.

The previous car’s cheap-ish interior gets ditched for a contemporary and finely detailed effort that nearly rivals those from Audi and Infiniti.

The horizontal finger-swipe bars for audio volume and fan speed are pretty cool but rotary knobs still work better.

Standard kit includes stitched dash-top, MyKey, heated and cooled leather front seats, remote start and MyLincoln Touch, the next level of connectivity between iPhone-dazed humanoids and their vehicles.

While it’s easy to get caught up in all the tech, a few hours on the road revealed Lincoln is also serious about giving the MKX some competitive moves. The suspension gets a makeover in the pursuit of more engaging road manners, and indeed, this 2011 is hands above the outgoing model when it comes to steering feel and body control.

Is the 2011 Lincoln MKX savvy enough to sway buyers from the premium Euro-brands? It may not have the badge, but it has the goods.
