This is a Ford F-150 that’s been tweaked, massaged and bulked up by the company’s Special Vehicles Team. Originally designed to hunt down other race trucks in the sand and heat of the Baja Peninsula, SVT Raptor’s range has grown to include the cold snow banks of Canada. It hunted then down in Baja and it hunts them down out here in the west, too.
All the controls are within easy reach – and there are a lot of them when you consider the integrated trailer brake control (worth every penny of its $300 cost) and the bank of accessory switches which also houses off-road specific controls.. Just above the centre stack is the navigation screen and control centre for the Sync infotainment system.
Taking on fuel (something that happens a lot) takes some time, firstly because Raptor needs a lot to eat and secondly because there are so many questions from people who are attracted by the truck’s orange exterior with the “mud splash” graphic package.
Under the hood with its functional air extractors resides a 5.4L Triton V8 that pushes out 320 horsepower launched by 390 lb. ft. of torque. A 6.4L version is on the way.
Power gets to the wheels through a 6-speed automatic transmission and an electronically-controlled part-time 4WD system. Hammering the throttle off the line isn’t going to light up the big beefy 315/70 specially-designed tires mounted on 17 inch rims, but the roll-out is authoritative and speed just climbs. And climbs.
I expected a truck to handle the wicked conditions of the Baja would be a rigid rider, but not so. This is the smoothest off-road specific 4x4 pickup I’ve driven. The secret is the internal bypass Fox Racing Shox shock absorbers, the only bypass shocks you’ll find on a street truck.

2011 Ford Edge-Test Drive

Driving the 2011 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX in back-to-back road tests has been an interesting experience.
Since they blew away most of the competition, I thought it might be interesting to compare them to one another, especially since the upscale Edge Limited comes fitted with most of the kit that’s standard on MKX. So for the extra money it takes to buy the Lincoln, what’s it got that Edge Limited doesn’t? Not a lot, as it turns out.
Both are built on the CD3 platform, also used by Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ sedans, with a 2,824 mm wheelbase and a fully independent suspension that delivers a smooth, car-like ride. Interior space is virtually identical, as is cargo space behind the rear seats (69 litres) and towing capacity (1,588 kg). Both have all-wheel-drive, a six-speed automatic transmission, Ford’s Easy Fuel capless filling system, rear view camera, power liftgate, push-button start, keyless entry and a panoramic sunroof.
The voice-activated SYNC communication/entertainment system is the same, as is the LCD screen in the centre stack with its soft-touch controls. Biggest difference, other than styling – and many prefer Edge’s cleaner frontal treatment – is under the hood. MKX is powered by a 3.7-litre V6 making 305 hp while our Edge Limited has a 3.5-litre V6 rated at 285 hp.
Edge’s driving position and visibility are excellent. So are the cabin ergonomics –with one exception. It takes too light a touch to activate the four-way hazard lights, which I kept doing by brushing the switch with my wrist while using the touch screen controls. I don’t think I have accidentally activated the flashers more than twice before in all the vehicles I’ve driven and I’ve done it four times in less than a week with the Edge. Perhaps the switch could be moved or it could require a little more effort to turn them on?
The MKX is equipped with optional adaptive cruise control, which I really came to appreciate, especially in heavy traffic, and now I am having to survive with Edge’s optional cruise control that governs only speed, and not the distance between you and the vehicle in front. Oh, the hardship!

MKS is a whole lotta car

The Lincoln MKS is quite simply a whole lot of car - literally and figuratively.
This week’s tester is the EcoBoost model, which uses new direct injection, twin-turbocharging technology on four- and six-cylinder engines to produce more power and improve fuel economy.
The MKS was actually the first Ford model to use EcoBoost back in 2009, in the form of a 3.5-litre V6 that would make many V8s green with envy. And that is the aim after all - to provide the power of a bigger V8, along with the fuel economy of a V6.  Consider EcoBoost a success, then. The twin-turbo V6 in the MKS is an absolute blast, getting this big sedan moving in a hurry at the drop of a pedal. The generous helping of torque (350 lb.-ft. of it) is available from as low as 1,500 RPM.
There’s a reason why the steering is so manageable and Active Park Assist is available - the MKS feels just as big as it looks. There are some very tricky blindspots due to massive side pillars, a high beltline, and not a whole lot of glass. Active Park Assist in particular is a Godsend. It uses sensors on the front and rear of the vehicle, along with a rear backup camera, to help the driver out every time he or she throws the shifter into reverse. It also has an idiot-proof parallel parking system that does most of the work for the driver.
The MKS is tailor-made for those who want oodles of room in their cars. Look at any competitor in its price range, and the MKS owner can only laugh, as interior dimensions are much larger in the Lincoln. Heck - the MKS has more front legroom than many full-size luxury sedans, including the standard wheelbase BMW 7 Series, Audi A8 and Mercedes-Benz S550. It trumps those same vehicles in a smattering of other interior dimensions as well.
Everything else about the interior is top-notch. This vehicle was made for long trips, with big, soft seats, standard heated seats front and rear, adaptive cruise control, surround sound system and satellite radio, among (many) other things. Leather and chrome are used throughout but they don’t make the interior look remotely ostentatious. Even the massive waterfall grille on the outside seems less in-your-face than it does on other Lincolns.
It’s obvious Ford went all out with the MKS, not going halfway with anything, whether it be room, comfort, technology or performance. It’s a pleasure to drive, and judging by comments from passengers, a pleasure in which to be driven.

Ford Finally Launches Tweets, Pandora in Car

Ford is starting to deliver on its promise of letting car owners listen to Tweets and Pandora while they drive, all with voice control.
The feature is now permitted for owners of the 2011 Ford Fiesta—all 14,000 of them—but Ford will extend it to other car models in the future.
So while driving, you can ask your radio to read back your Twitter feed by stating, “Read timeline.” Or you can ask your radio to play a certain Pandora station or to “Bookmark song,” or you can state “Thumbs up” or “Thumbs down.”
It works like this: You can link your BlackBerry, Android phone or iPhone to the car radio. You download the new Sync AppLink from www.syncmyride.com. Transfer it to the radio via USB drive. Then your radio will permit voice control over certain apps on your phone.
The first apps to work with the system are Pandora, Open Beak (a Twitter feed) and Stitcher (a news service) but other apps will be enabled in the future.
Ford said 46 percent of smartphone owners have apps on their phones and 36 percent of those use those apps while commuting. The AppLink software is designed to make app use safe in the car.
Ford’s Doug VanDagens said, “Ford has worked hard to be a step ahead or at least in step with the speed of the consumer electronics market, and to leverage the technologies, features and services we know our customers want to be connected to while driving.”

2010 Escape Adds New Safety Technologies

The 2010 Ford Escape will feature:

Integrated Spotter Mirror (standard) - a consumer-friendly, affordable blind spot technology that consists of an outside rearview mirror designed with a secondary convex spotter in the top outer corner, which is aimed exclusively at the driver's blind spot. When traffic enters the driver's blind spot on either side of the vehicle, it is visible in the secondary convex mirror, helping provide the driver broader peripheral view.
MyKey (standard) - allows owners to program a key that can limit the vehicle's top speed and audio volume.
Rear View Camera System - uses an exterior camera embedded in the rear of the vehicle that sends images to a video display in the rearview mirror or the navigation system screen to help enhance visibility directly behind the vehicle when it is in reverse.
Active Park Assist - uses an ultrasonic-based sensing system and Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) to position the vehicle for parallel parking, calculate the optimal steering angle and quickly steer the vehicle into a parking spot. The technology is a major leap forward in speed and ease of use compared with the camera-reliant systems offered by competitors. Ford's system requires less driver interaction and reduces the risk of selecting a parking spot that is too tight. Ford's Active Park Assist also works in downhill parking situations, unlike competing systems.
SYNC - Traffic, Directions and Information - which leverages industry-leading voice-recognition software, integrated GPS technology, and a customer's Bluetooth-capable mobile phone. DEARBORN, Mich., Dec. 6, 2010 –The Clarion-supplied, factory-installed Voice-Activated Navigation System, available in the Ford Fusion, ranks “Highest Satisfaction,” according to J.D. Power and Associates 2010 Navigation Usage and Satisfaction Study. The Clarion navigation system in the Ford Flex ranks second, followed by the Ford Taurus and the Lincoln MKS.  

Co-developed with Ford, the Clarion navigation systems are installed in twenty two 2010 model year vehicles. Clarion systems in selected Ford and Lincoln models earned six of the top 10 positions, receiving the highest marks from consumers for system appearance, navigation display screen, routing and speed of system.

"Providing advanced Infotainment and Navigation systems offering customers the most important real-time information requires an intense focus on the Human Machine Interface (HMI). It's not just about offering the latest and greatest features and technologies. The features must be presented in a way that keeps a driver's eyes on the road and hands on the wheel while benefiting from the additional value the features provide,” states Jim Buczkowski, director, Global Electrical and Electronics Systems Engineering for Ford Motor Company.

Ford Uses ‘Forensic’ Engineering

  • Ford lab development analysts search for tiny imperfections in car parts; part of relentless drive for quality

DEARBORN, Mich., Dec. 2, 2010 – What looks like a harmless speck of sand to one person can be a big nuisance for a new car owner.  That is why engineers at Ford Motor Company are working with the same computed tomography (CT) scanners that police and hospitals use to improve vehicle quality.
Much like crime solvers on television, Ford has its own team of “forensic” investigators employing cutting-edge scientific methods to improve the quality of parts such as gears, latches, welds, nuts, bolts, fasteners and sensors before they are assembled into a finished car.

“The CT scanner is an essential tool to help us study why parts aren’t performing at their optimum level,” said Beltran. “It can be used for any number of things – troubleshooting for supplier parts, new parts that engineers are testing or parts from vehicles undergoing durability testing. When a part contains a deficiency, it’s critical to address it right away. We need to find out why. We need to either improve the part or improve the process.”

Before the lab obtained the scanner, each component was studied and taken apart by hand. “We’d spend hours sanding it a little, polishing it a little, examining it under a microscope and then take a picture of it, repeating this process several times,” said Beltran. “Even then it was possible that we could go right through a defect and not even know it.”

With the scanner, many issues can be solved within a few hours. Once the mystery is solved, the information is given to a materials engineering group that works with designers and a supplier base to resolve the issue and/or correct the situation.

DEARBORN, Mich., Nov. 30, 2010 – Old clothes turn up in plenty of places – the hamper, the bottom of a closet, behind the washing machine. They’re also found in the next-generation Ford Focus, albeit in different and more useful forms.

Ford’s “reduce, reuse and recycle” commitment is part of the company’s broader global sustainability strategy to reduce its environmental footprint while at the same time accelerating the development of advanced, fuel-efficient vehicle technologies around the world.

Over the past several years, Ford has concentrated on increasing the use of non-metal recycled and bio-based materials, including soy foam seat cushions, recycled resins for underbody systems, recycled yarns on seat covers and natural-fiber plastic for interior components.

“The good news is these jeans didn’t end up in a landfill, nor did we use the water, fertilizer and land to grow virgin cotton,” Majeske said. “It’s an alternative that our customers can appreciate, it’s cost effective, and it’s better for our planet. These are the kinds of sustainable solutions we are looking for in all our vehicles.”

“Great fuel economy is our first priority for reducing the vehicle’s impact on the environment,” said Majeske. “As we deliver that, we also seek to use materials inside a vehicle that reduce the environmental impact as well. The use of recycled clothing is one step, but what else are people discarding that could be used in our vehicles? Ford is determined to find out.”

Real Review-2011 Ford F-Series Super Duty

I’ve been in a drag race before, sometimes watching the lights on a pole between the lanes turn from red to green and other times watching a similar sequence above an intersection. I’ve towed heavy things behind my semi’s tractor and in the bed of a pickup truck. However, I have never been in a race dragging over thirty tons of axle-mounted steel behind me. Yet there I was, throttle to the floor of a spanking new 2011 Ford F450 as it bucked and shook its way down hard packed mine debris with a 39-ton, 78,000 pound Caterpillar front end loader hitched to my back end. Though I detest using the word, it was...AWESOME!.

Super Duty trucks, specifically the F-250 and F-350 versions, are a staple of America’s work force. Gas engines power the fleets where low acquisition price and lighter towing needs make the torque and longevity of a diesel an unnecessary luxury. Private owners of Super Duty trucks are a passionate group, and if you are a Ford Super Duty customer it is likely that you have an ardent interest in these Ford’s latest Super Duty trucks which are now in showrooms. 

PHOTO (select to view enlarged photo) We pulled 10,000 pounds and hauled a thousand pounds using both gas and diesel power, rode shotgun for an uphill-downhill maxed out 24,400 pound F-350 tow, and slid around and over some gnarly rocks in an F-250.
 
 
The 6.7 diesel debut with 390 horsepower and 735 pound feet of torque got a bump to 400 hp/800 pounds while to deliver 18-20% better fuel economy than previous Super Duty diesels. Its companion 6.2-liter short stroke gas engine makes 385 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque, 85 hp and 40 lb.-ft. greater than current 5.4-liter engines. It boasts 15% improved fuel economy.

The diesel, the first Super Duty truck engine built and designed by Ford, uses a Compacted Graphite Iron block for better strength, 30,000 psi third-generation Bosch common rail fuel injection (currently using five of a possible seven injection pulses), and a new Honeywell single shaft turbocharger.

Our travel through mine property, now recycling mine tailings into gravel and crushed rock for construction, took us through a pit of mud deep enough to reach the floor pan and viscous like axle grease. With just a bit of power and momentum we traveled through uneventfully.

Real Review- 2011 Taurus

APPEARANCE: "Its chunky, high-shouldered body and long, low passenger cabin, with well-sloped windshield and rear window, give it a muscular look, which is further emphasized by bold character lines on the hood and sides."

COMFORT: "While space is not at a premium inside the Taurus, neither is it wasted. The result is hip- and leg-room usually associated with a crossover or SUV. No complaints about headroom, either, and there are many useful small and not so small storage areas around the cabin."

SAFETY: "starts with a strong, rigid main unibody structure designed and built for passenger protection. A full complement of, front, front side, and full-length "Safety Canopy"® air bags is standard,"

RIDE AND HANDLING: "fully-independent MacPherson strut front, multilink rear suspension is tuned moderately, for good ride comfort, but with good attention paid to the details of tuning."

PERFORMANCE: "the naturally-aspirated models are not deficient, with 263 horsepower (at 6250 rpm) and 249 lb-ft of torque (at 4500 rpm) from the 3.5-liter twin-cam V6 engine."

Ford is taking the intiative for better fuel mileage

  • Ford Fiesta: The combination of a 120-horsepower 1.6-liter four-cylinder and available six-speed dual-clutch transmission delivers best-in-class 40 mpg on the highway, topping Toyota Yaris and Honda Fit by 4 mpg and 5 mpg, respectively
